Mother Rock could ease be called the Mother of Invention wines because JH 'Stompie' Meyer plays something of the Frank Zappa role in the local wine scene - and not just because of the hair.
Incidentally his hair is shorter now but the wines no less adventurous, and since moving onto his own farm in the beautiful Piket-bo-Berg in the Swartland we're curious to see what comes from the vines up there.
This Pet Nat (or Pettilant Naturelle, or Method Ancestrale, which is made by bottling a wine before it is dry and letting the fermentation complete in bottle) is made from 100% Pinotage (yes Pinotage) fruit and has a lovely zip and crunch to it, with some subtle plummy notes coming through at the end.
This wine was bottled after 10 days and then left on its lees for 5 moths before bottling. It's bracingly crispy and dry and a great natural, slightly funky alternative to MCC.
